What Makes the MRW-G3 Different From the MRW-G2

USB 40 Gbps vs USB 10 Gbps — The Real-World Time Difference

The MRW-G3 uses USB4 at 40 Gbps. The older MRW-G2 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps. When transferring a full 480GB card at 1,800 MB/s card read speed via the Sony MRW-G3 Dubai, the transfer completes in approximately 4.5 minutes. The same 480GB card through the MRW-G2 is throttled to PCIe 3.0 speeds and takes approximately 10–11 minutes. For production companies running multiple camera bodies with 480GB cards, that difference is 5–6 minutes per card per day — significant on a 10-hour shoot with multiple operators.

CFexpress Type A Only — No SD Slot

Important: The Sony MRW-G3 reads CFexpress Type A cards only. It does not have an SD card slot. This is the key difference from the MRW-G2, which read both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II cards in a single device. If you shoot with a mix of CFexpress and SD cards — for example, using CFexpress in Slot 1 of a Sony a7 IV and SD in Slot 2 — you will need a separate SD card reader alongside the MRW-G3. If your workflow is exclusively CFexpress Type A, the MRW-G3 is the correct single reader. If you need both card types in one device, the MRW-G2 remains the right choice. Chat on WhatsApp and we will confirm which reader suits your specific setup.

Backward Compatibility With PCIe 3.0 Cards

The MRW-G3 is fully compatible with older Sony CFexpress Type A 2.0 cards including the 80GB TOUGH (CEA-G80T). Those older cards transfer at their native PCIe 3.0 speeds through the MRW-G3 — the same speed they would achieve with the MRW-G2. The upgrade benefit is exclusively for CFexpress 4.0 cards (CEA-G240T, CEA-G480T). If you currently own only the 80GB TOUGH and have no plans to upgrade to 4.0 cards, the MRW-G2 is sufficient. The Sony MRW-G3 Dubai becomes essential the moment you add any CEA-G Series 4.0 card to your kit.

Heat Dissipation for Extended Transfers

The MRW-G3 features a redesigned heat-dissipating enclosure specifically engineered for sustained high-speed transfers. When offloading 480GB of 4K cinema footage continuously, the heat generated at USB 40 Gbps is substantially greater than at 10 Gbps. The MRW-G3’s thermal management prevents throttling during long transfer sessions — a genuine reliability concern that cheaper third-party readers at similar price points cannot match.
